about

Around 1918, Stravinsky entered a new phase in his compositional approach. A few years after the sensational 'Rite of Spring', he turned away from large scale orchestral compositions towards miniatures and chamber music, 'The Soldier's Tale' being the pinnacle of this minimalistic period. It is to this theatrical work that we owe the 'Three Pieces'. They are dedicated to the Swiss philanthropist and excellent amateur clarinettist Werner Reinhart, in gratitude for funding the premiere of 'The Soldier's Tale'. The first piece explores the low, 'chalumeau' register of the instrument, while the second shows of the virtuosity and dexterity of the clarinet. One can almost imagine a bird being chased by a cat. The third miniature takes inspiration from the syncopated rhythms of the ragtime.
