about

The 'Première rhapsodie' is the only substantial piece for solo clarinet by Claude Debussy. It was originally composed in 1910 for the Paris Conservatoire entry competition, in it's original scoring for clarinet and piano. In 1911, Debussy also issued a version of the 'rhapsodie' for clarinet and orchestra. Having been appointed a member of the 'conseil supérieur' of the Conservatoire in 1909, Debussy had to fulfil certain duties, including sitting on the examining board for the clarinet auditions. After hearing his 'rhapsodie', Debussy seemed pleased with the standard of playing as he wrote to his editor Jacques Durand : 'The clarinet competition [the previous day] went extremely well and, to judge by the expressions on the faces of my colleagues, the rhapsodie was a success… One of the candidates, Vandercruyssen, played it by heart and very musically. The rest were straightforward and nondescript.'
The original version was first performed in 1910 by the illustrious Professeur Mimart, to whom the 'rhapsodie' was also dedicated 'en témoignage de sympathie'. The premiere of the orchestral version was given in 1911 by Gaston Hamelin.
